マレーグマは、東南アジアの熱帯雨林に生息する、小型のクマ科動物である。こげ茶や黒の毛皮に、黄褐色の顔と鼻口、上胸にある目立つオレンジ色の三日月模様が特徴だ。幅広の頭部、筒形の突き出た鼻、小さな丸い耳をしている。オスとメスで外見に違いはないが、オスの方がメスよりも 10 ～ 20% 大きい。体長は 120 ～ 150 cm、体重は 27 ～ 65 kg。
