テングザルは霊長類の仲間で、ボルネオ島 (インドネシア、マレーシア、ブルネイ) の熱帯雨林、マングローブ林、湿地林に生息する。背中と頭頂部は暗いオレンジ色、胸と腹と上腕部は明るいオレンジ色、下半身と脚と腕はグレーの毛皮に覆われている。オスは特徴的な細長い鼻が唇の上までぶら下がっている。オスほど顕著ではないものの、メスも霊長類の中ではかなり目立つ鼻をしている。オスとメスの大きさは異なり、オスの平均体長は 66 ～ 76 cm、体重 16 ～ 22.5 kgであるのに対し、メスの体長は 53 ～ 62 cm、体重 7 ～ 12 kgである。
