ハイイロアザラシは大西洋の陸地周辺 (イギリス、アイルランド、アイスランド、ノルウェー、デンマーク、フランス、オランダ、ベルギー、ドイツ、スウェーデン、フィンランド、エストニア、ラトビア、リトアニア、ポーランド、ロシア、カナダ、アメリカ合衆国) に生息する海洋哺乳類である。西大西洋に棲息する個体は、東大西洋の個体よりもかなり大きい。オスは体長 2.3 ～ 2.9 m、体重 205 ～ 370 kg、メスは体長 1.9 ～ 2.3 m、体重 160 ～ 250 kgである。
