オオカワウソは、アマゾン川流域や南米のパンタナール湿地帯に生息する大型の半水棲哺乳類である。ビロードのような厚く茶色の毛皮で、喉の周りには特徴的な白いマークがある。大きな水かきのある足と、泳ぐために適応された翼のような尾を持つ。オスとメスでの体格差はなく、体重に差はあるものの、体長は 150 ～ 180 cm が一般的である。オスの体重は 26 ～ 32 kg、メスは若干軽く、22 ～ 26 kgである。
