ヒクイドリは、パプアニューギニア、インドネシア、オーストラリア北部の熱帯雨林、マングローブ、草原に生息する大型の飛べない鳥である。もさもさした毛髪状の黒い羽毛と、丈夫な灰色の脚を有する。頭の上に特徴的な茶色い突起があり、こげ茶色の曲がったくちばし、濃い青色の喉と薄い青色の頭頂部をしている。首の後ろはオレンジ色で、喉から赤い肉垂が 2 つぶら下がっている。オスとメスの外見は似ているが、メスがオスよりはるかに大柄で、とさかやくちばしも大きく、色も鮮やかだ。オスのヒクイドリの体高は平均 112～136 cm、体重は 29～34 kg。メスの体高は平均 140～170 cm、体重は 46～69 kg。
