アカカンガルー (Macropus rufus) は、オーストラリア全土に生息する有袋哺乳類で、沿岸地域と熱帯雨林を除くあらゆる場所で見られる。大きな L 字型の後脚と小さな前脚、大きなウサギのような耳、丸い鼻先の大きな顔が特徴だ。性的二型のため、オスとメスで外見が異なる。オスはメスよりもはるかに大きく、立った状態で体高1.3～1.6m、長い尻尾は1.3 m、体重 55～90 kg。メスは小さく、立った状態で体高 0.85～1.05 m、体重 18～40 kg。オスは赤い毛皮をしており、腹の色は薄い。脚、胸、前脚の筋肉は発達している。メスは灰色の毛皮で、筋肉質ではない。
