La chiocciola gigante africana (o Achatina achatina) è una grande specie di gasteropode che vive nelle foreste dell'Africa occidentale, soprattutto in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Costa d'Avorio, Ghana e Nigeria. Ha un corpo grande con un guscio che può essere giallo, arancione o marrone con strisce nere. Questa specie è ermafrodita: può avere gli organi riproduttivi sia maschili che femminili, quindi non esiste distinzione tra maschio e femmina. Tuttavia, i piccoli o i giovani adulti che non hanno ancora sviluppato gli organi riproduttivi vengono considerati maschi.
