Il panda gigante (o Ailuropoda melanoleuca) è una specie di orso originaria delle montagne della Cina centrale. Ha una pelliccia bianca e nera molto caratteristica con zampe, orecchie e cerchi attorno agli occhi neri. Si nutre quasi esclusivamente di bambù ed è quindi molto legato alla presenza di foreste ricche di bambù per poter sopravvivere. È un cibo a basso contenuto calorico e il panda deve mangiarne molto: passa infatti la maggior parte delle sue giornate mangiando e in cerca di cibo. Con un apporto calorico così basso, il panda dà alla luce cuccioli molto piccoli e fragili.
