Lo scarabeo sacro è uno scarabeo stercorario originario delle dune costiere e delle paludi mediterranee. È diffuso in Nord Africa, Europa e Medio Oriente. Ha sei protuberanze oblunghe sulla testa e altre quattro su ciascuna delle zampe anteriori che formano una caratteristica raggiera intorno alla parte anteriore del corpo. Lo scarabeo sacro misura tra 10 e 25 millimetri e ha un carapace nero e lucido.
