Il rinoceronte bianco meridionale è un grande ungulato originario dell'Africa meridionale (Sudafrica, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia). Di dimensioni imponenti, ha una pelle spessa e grigia e due corni, di cui il frontale molto più lungo rispetto al secondario. La testa è quasi rettangolare e il muso è squadrato. Le orecchie sporgono dalla sommità del cranio e sul collo è presente una protuberanza formata dalla muscolatura che sorregge la testa. I maschi sono lunghi tra 3,7 e 4 metri, alti tra 170 e 188 centimetri e pesano in media 2.300 chili. Le femmine sono lunghe tra 3,4 e 3,65 metri, alte tra 160 e 177 centimetri e pesano circa 1.700 chili.
