El oso polar (o Ursus maritimus) es una especie de úrsido de gran tamaño que vive en el círculo polar ártico y las regiones subárticas. Su manto es completamente blanco y sus ojos y hocico, oscuros; son corpulentos, con patas fuertes y pies grandes adecuados para nadar. Para minimizar la pérdida de calor, los osos tienen orejas pequeñas y cola corta. La longitud de los machos se encuentra entre los 2,4 y los 3 m, y pesan entre 350 y 750 kg, mientras que las hembras miden entre 1,8 y 2,4 m de largo, y pesan entre 150 y 250 kg. Tanto machos como hembras se alimentan de focas anilladas y barbudas.
