El ñu negro (Connochaetes gnou) es un gran ungulado nativo del sur de África cuyo nombre común procede del peculiar sonido que emiten cuando se asustan. La especie se distingue por su pelaje entre marrón y negro, y unos grandes cuernos en forma de L. Es posible distinguir a los machos de las hembras por su color más oscuro y mayor tamaño. Ambos sexos presentan una melena espesa y una cola larga similar a la del caballo, con unas medidas de entre 1,7 y 2,2 m de largo, de 1,06 a 1,21 m hasta la cruz, y con un peso de entre 120 y 193 kg.
