El perrito de la pradera de cola negra es una especie de roedor que habita en llanuras, praderas, estepas y zonas semidesérticas de EE. UU., así como en pequeñas zonas de Canadá y México. Presenta un pelaje color arena más claro en la parte inferior, así como garras largas, orejas pequeñas, ojos negros y la punta de la cola negra. Los machos son algo más grandes que las hembras, pero su aspecto es, por lo demás, idéntico. Los perritos de la pradera de cola negra pesan entre 0,68 y 1,36 kg, su cuerpo mide entre 36 y 43 cm, y la longitud de su cola va desde los 7,6 hasta los 10,2 cm.
