El castor americano es un gran roedor que vive en zonas fluviales y bosques templados de EE. UU. y Canadá. Presenta un pelaje doble: una capa exterior de pelo áspero y largo, y otra de pelo más corto y fino debajo que otorgan al pelaje del castor un aspecto erizado. Su coloración va desde el marrón hasta el rojizo o tostado. Los castores tienen orejas y ojos pequeños, una nariz negra en la parte superior del hocico y unos incisivos grandes y pronunciados. Su longitud corporal es de entre 74 y 90 cm, la cola puede medir entre 20 y 35 cm, y pesan entre 11 y 32 kg.
