El babirusa de Sulawesi es una especie de cerdo originario de la isla de Sulawesi en Indonesia y otras islas circundantes. Su piel es gris y prácticamente no tiene pelo, y los machos presentan cuatro grandes colmillos que se curvan hacia la cabeza. La longitud de su cuerpo es de entre 85 y 110 cm, su cola mide entre 29 y 32 cm, y tiene una altura hasta los hombros de entre 58 y 66 cm. El peso de los machos oscila entre 70 y 100 kg, mientras que el de las hembras es de entre 45 y 80 kg.

‘Babirusa’ means ‘pig deer’ in Malay.
Babirusas have a two chambered stomach, more like that of sheep than of other pigs.
The male babirusas tusks continue to grow throughout his life and can even grow into the skull.
Babirusas are missing a bone in the snout that other pigs have, so they do not engage in ‘rooting’ behaviour typical of pigs.
Babirusas are excellent swimmers; it is thought that they are found across various Indonesian islands because they swam to them.
