La foca gris es una especie de mamífero marino que habita alrededor de las costas bañadas por el océano Atlántico norte (Reino Unido, Irlanda, Islandia, Noruega, Dinamarca, Francia, Países Bajos, Bélgica, Alemania, Suecia, Finlandia, Estonia, Letonia, Lituania, Polonia, Rusia, Canadá y Estados Unidos). Los ejemplares del Atlántico norte occidental son visiblemente más grandes que los del oriental. Los machos miden entre 2,3 y 2,9 m de largo y pesan de 205 a 370 kg, mientras que las hembras miden entre 1,9 y 2,3 m de largo y pesan de 160 a 250 kg.
