In Afrika gibt es heute in freier Wildbahn etwa 20.000 Löwen, allerdings macht der Westafrikanische Löwe (Panthera leo leo) nur einen kleinen Teil dieses Bestands aus. Es gibt auf dem gesamten Kontinent nur noch 250 Exemplare, was die Unterart zu einer der am stärksten bedrohten Unterarten weltweit macht. Derzeit gilt der Westafrikanische Löwe als "vom Aussterben bedroht".
