红尾蚺是原生于中美洲和南美洲的大型蛇种，分布广泛，其下又可分为 9 个亚种，全都能够适应大多数的环境，但主要集中于雨林、沿岸和半干燥气候地带。红尾蚺的体色和花纹各有不同，典型的外观是由浅棕、深棕和黑色的鳞片组成遍及全身的菱形花纹。此种蛇为两性异形，雌雄样貌不同。雄蛇平均 1.8 至 2.4 米长，在泄殖腔附近长有交配用的骨盆刺。雌蛇体型较大，平均 2.1 米 至 3 米长，骨盆刺比雄蛇的略小。
