墨西哥鈍口螈 (Ambystoma mexicanum) 是墨西哥淡水湖獨有的兩棲類，目前僅剩下霍奇米爾科湖是牠們的自然棲地。野生的墨西哥鈍口螈體色為綠色與棕色，全身上下有深色斑點，不過寵物交易市場中的墨西哥鈍口螈通常都是白變 (白色) 或其他鮮豔顏色的異色個體。牠們具有從頸部長出來的醒目扇狀外鰓，這是所有蠑螈幼體都有的特徵，不過由於墨西哥鈍口螈的生活型態更偏向水棲，牠們還保有這些外鰓。牠們的臉部較寬，有小眼睛跟大大的嘴巴。體長約 15 公分至 45 公分，平均重約 300 公克。
