美洲牛蛙是一種棲息於美國和加拿大沼澤、池塘及湖泊中的大型兩棲類動物，根據環境不同，背部有可能是深綠色、淡綠色或淡棕色，腹部顏色較淺。其背部可能會有深色斑點，腿部會有帶狀圖案，但有些牛蛙變種身上沒有任何花紋。美洲牛蛙有明顯兩性差異，雌性的體型比雄性大，雄性有獨特的黃色喉嚨，頭部兩側有較大的鼓室 (卵狀聽覺腺體)。美洲牛蛙體長介於 90 至 152 公釐之間，體重為 300 至 500 公克。
