黑尾草原犬鼠是一種棲息於美國草原和半沙漠地區的齧齒動物，在加拿大和墨西哥部分小型區域也有分布。黑尾草原犬鼠有沙色毛皮，腹側顏色較淡。牠們有長爪子、小耳朵、黑眼睛和尖端呈黑色的尾巴。雄性體型比雌性大，除此之外外觀相同。黑尾草原犬鼠體重為 0.68 至 1.36 公斤，頭部加身體的長度為 36 至 43 公分，尾長 7.6 至 10.2 公分。
