美國短吻鱷是棲息於美國南部及墨西哥之河流、沼澤和濕地中的大型鱷目動物。美國短吻鱷的顏色可為深綠色、棕色或灰色。牠們有寬廣的圓形頭部，有一張大嘴和許多牙齒，部分牙齒會向外突出而可見。美國短吻鱷的身體很寬，背部有數條突起的鱗脊。牠們的腿橫向伸出，移動時貼近地面，但奔跑時會將身體抬離地面。雄性美國短吻鱷體長 3.4 至 4.6 公尺，體重 200 至 626 公斤。雌性體長 2.6 至 3.0 公尺，體重 30 至 200 公斤。美國短吻鱷一生都會持續成長，因此體型能達到非常大的尺寸。
