馬來熊是生活在東南亞熱帶雨林中的一種小型熊類。牠們有深褐色至黑色的毛皮，臉部和口鼻部呈黃褐色，上胸部則有獨特的橘色新月狀斑紋。馬來熊有寬大的頭部、方方長長的口鼻部以及小巧的圓形耳朵。雄性和雌性的外觀相似，但雄性的體型比雌性大 10% 至 20%。牠們的體長介於 120 至 150 公分之間，體重則介於 27 至 65 公斤之間。
