大西洋灰海豹是分布在大西洋周遭陸塊 (英國、愛爾蘭、冰島、挪威、丹麥、法國、荷蘭、比利時、德國、瑞典、芬蘭、愛沙尼亞、拉脫維亞、立陶宛、波蘭、俄羅斯、加拿大、美國) 的一種海生哺乳類動物。西大西洋灰海豹的體型比東大西洋灰海豹大上許多。其雄性體長約 2.3 到 2.9 公尺，重 205 到 370 公斤，雌性則約 1.9 到 2.3 公尺長，重 160 到 250 公斤。
