巨獺是棲息在南美洲亞馬遜河盆地與潘特納爾濕地的大型半水棲哺乳類動物。巨獺有濃密如絨毛的棕色毛皮，喉部帶有獨特的白色斑紋。牠們的腳掌巨大且有蹼，且為了游泳演化出機翼般的尾巴。雄性與雌性巨獺的體型相似，身長通常都介於 150 到 180 公分之間，不過體重則有所不同。雄性重 26 到 32 公斤，雌性則略輕，約 22 到 26 公斤重。
