条纹鬣狗 (Hyaena hyaena) 是一种广食性掠食者和食腐动物，原生于北非、中东和西亚。它们生活的环境很多样，从开阔的莽原、草原和林地，到干燥的山区都有分布。条纹鬣狗有强壮的前肢、粗壮的颈部和较短的后腿，因此身体前侧较高、后侧较低。它们有宽大的头部和口鼻部、大大的尖耳朵，且两眼间距较宽。条纹鬣狗的毛皮呈棕色，身上与腿上有垂直的黑色条纹。背部从头到尾都长有长长的鬃毛，尾段则形成多毛的粗尾巴。雄性和雌性的外表相似，不过雄性的体型比雌性稍大且更重一些。雄性条纹鬣狗肩高 65 至 80 厘米，身长 85 至 130 厘米，尾巴长 25 至 40 厘米，体重则为 26 至 41 公斤。雌性站立时的肩高 60 至 75 厘米，身长 85 至 105 厘米，尾巴长 25 至 40 厘米，体重介于 26 至 34 公斤之间。
