美洲牛蛙是一种栖息于美国和加拿大沼泽、池塘及湖泊中的大型两栖类动物，根据环境不同，背部有可能是深绿色、淡绿色或淡棕色，腹部颜色较浅。其背部可能会有深色斑点，腿部会有带状图案，但有些牛蛙变种身上没有任何花纹。美洲牛蛙有明显两性差异，雌性的体型比雄性大，雄性有独特的黄色喉咙，头部两侧有较大的鼓室 (卵状听觉腺体)。美洲牛蛙体长介于 90 至 152 毫米之间，体重为 300 至 500 克。
