黑尾草原犬鼠是一种栖息于美国草原和半沙漠地区的啮齿动物，在加拿大和墨西哥部分小型区域也有分布。黑尾草原犬鼠有沙色毛皮，腹侧颜色较淡。它们有长爪子、小耳朵、黑眼睛和尖端呈黑色的尾巴。雄性体型比雌性大，除此之外外观相同。黑尾草原犬鼠体重为 0.68 至 1.36 公斤，头部加身体的长度为 36 至 43 厘米，尾长 7.6 至 10.2 厘米。
