巨獭是栖息在南美洲亚马逊河盆地与潘塔纳尔湿地的大型半水栖哺乳类动物。巨獭有如绒毛般浓密的棕色毛皮，喉部有独特的白色斑纹。它们的脚掌巨大、有蹼，它们还为了游泳演化出机翼般的尾巴。雄性与雌性巨獭的体型相似，身长通常都介于 150 到 180 厘米之间，不过体重则存在差距。雄性重 26 到 32 公斤，雌性则略轻，约 22 到 26 公斤重。
