南方鹤鸵 (Casuarius casuarius) 是一种不会飞的大型鸟类，分布于巴布亚新几内亚、印度尼西亚及澳大利亚北部的热带雨林、红树林以及草原地带。它们有黑色的羽毛、像披着毛皮一样的毛绒身体和强健的灰色腿脚。南方鹤鸵的头顶有显眼的棕色骨盔，弯曲的鸟喙为棕黑色，喉咙为宝蓝色，头顶为浅蓝色。它的后颈为橙色，喉咙下方垂有两块红色的肉髯。虽然雌雄外貌近似，但雌性的体型明显大于雄性，头冠、鸟喙更大，色彩也更为鲜艳。雄性南方鹤鸵身高约 112 至 136 厘米，平均体重在 29 至 34 公斤左右。雌性身长在 140 至 170 厘米之间，平均体重在 46 至 69 公斤之间。
