Они встречаются на полях, в садах и парках, у водоёмов и на морском побережье. У солнечных бабочек жёлтые крылья с коричневыми или чёрными пятнами и каймой. Самки, как правило, не такого яркого цвета, как самцы, у них есть жёлтые пятна вдоль тёмного окаймления крыльев. Размах крыльев солнечных бабочек варьируется от 5,5 до 7,8 см. Гусеница ярко-жёлтая или зелёная, с жёлтой полосой и синими пятнами на боках.
