У эму вытянутая голая шея голубоватого оттенка, густое коричневое оперение, начинающееся ниже шеи, и длинные серые ноги с крупными трёхпалыми лапами. У них серый клюв и оранжевые глаза, перья на макушке топорщатся. Самцы и самки выглядят одинаково, при этом самки обычно крупнее и тяжелее самцов. Рост самцов эму варьируется от 1,5 до 1,8 м, длина — от 1,39 до 1,57 м, а вес — от 30 до 55 кг. Рост самок может быть от 1,6 до 1,9 м, длина — от 1,5 до 1,64 м, а вес — от 35 до 60 кг.
