Обыкновенный бегемот (Hippopotamus amphibius) — это крупное млекопитающее, которое обитает в реках Тропической Африки. У этих массивных любителей воды длинные выдающиеся вперёд зубы, выступающие поверх морды ноздри, маленькие уши и толстая серо-коричневая кожа. Длина тела самца составляет от 4 до 5 м, а вес — от 1500 до 2000 кг, при этом у самок длина тела обычно от 3,3 до 4,2 м, а вес — от 1000 до 1500 кг.
