O urso-polar (Ursus maritimus) é uma espécie de ursino de grande porte que vive no Círculo Ártico e nas regiões Subárticas. Com pelagem completamente branca, olhos e nariz escuros, ele tem uma conformação robusta, com pernas fortes e patas grandes, bem adaptadas para o nado. Para minimizar a perda de calor, os ursos têm orelhas pequenas e cauda curta. Os machos têm entre 2,4 e 3 m de comprimento, e pesam entre 350 e 750 kg; as fêmeas, têm de 1,8 a 2,4 m, com peso entre 150 e 250 kg. Ambos os sexos se alimentam de focas-aneladas e focas-barbudas.
