O gorila-ocidental-das-terras-baixas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) é nativo de Camarões, do Gabão, da República do Congo e do sul do Níger. Vive e forrageia em florestas pluviais, florestas pantanosas e lavouras abandonadas. Tem pele preta, olhos frontais escuros, testa proeminente, narinas grandes e uma pelagem grossa que cobre quase todo o corpo, exceto face, orelhas, mãos e pés. Os machos são muito maiores que as fêmeas e, quando ficam adultos, o pelo das costas adquire uma coloração cinzenta, por isso eles são conhecidos como "costas prateadas". Os gorilas vivem em pequenos grupos com um de costas prateadas controlando as fêmeas, os machos jovens e os filhotes.
