A hiena-malhada, também conhecida como hiena-risonha (Crocuta crocuta), é nativa da África Subsaariana. São predadores generalistas capazes de viver na maioria dos ambientes – apesar de não serem vistos em florestas pluviais e desertos. Têm membros anteriores robustos, pescoço musculoso e membros posteriores mais afilados, o que dá a elas uma aparência característica. Com cabeça avantajada e focinho largo, têm a pelagem cor de areia coberta de manchas pretas, além de uma juba que cobre o pescoço até o meio das costas.
