Como todas as espécies de lêmure, o lêmure-de-cauda-anelada (Lemur catta) é nativo de Madagáscar e não ocorre naturalmente em nenhum outro lugar do mundo. Os lêmures-de-cauda-anelada têm focinho pontudo, orelhas semelhantes às dos gatos e uma cauda longa, com 12 ou 13 anéis brancos, 13 ou 14 anéis pretos, e a ponta sempre preta. Têm geralmente entre 39 e 46 cm de comprimento, com a cauda medindo entre 56 e 63 cm, e vivem em grupos conhecidos como tropas, que se deslocam e forrageiam juntas. Os lêmures-de-cauda-anelada são onívoros e comem frutas, folhas, insetos e a maioria dos alimentos que encontram.
