O varano-malaio (Varanus salvator) é um réptil de grande porte nativo das florestas pluviais, pântanos e manguezais das áreas mais quentes do sudeste da Ásia e do subcontinente indiano. Sua coloração vai do verde-escuro ao preto, com marcas reticuladas claras, marrons e amarelas, por todo o corpo. As retículas muitas vezes ganham a forma de faixas na cauda. O varano-malaio apresenta dimorfismo sexual, com o macho atingindo um tamanho maior. Os varanos machos medem entre 1,5 m e 2 m de comprimento e pesam entre 5 kg e 50 kg, com uma média de 20 kg; as fêmeas medem entre 1,2 m e 1,8 m e pesam de 2 kg a 22 kg.
