O caramujo-tigre-gigante (Achatina achatina) é um gastrópode de grande porte que vive nas matas do oeste africano (especificamente Serra Leoa, Libéria, Costa do Marfim, Gana e Nigéria, entre outros). Seu corpo é cinza, com uma concha cônica que pode ser amarela, laranja ou acobreada com listras negras – esse padrão distinto é a inspiração para o nome. A espécie é hermafrodita, possuindo órgãos reprodutores masculinos e femininos. Portanto, não há "machos" e "fêmeas" distintos. Porém, os indivíduos mais jovens costumam não ter os órgãos reprodutores desenvolvidos e podem ser considerados "machos".
