O avestruz (Struthio camelus) é a maior espécie de ave do mundo. Os machos têm penas negras no corpo e brancas na cauda e ponta das asas, enquanto as fêmeas têm penas castanho-acinzentadas no corpo. Em ambos os sexos, cabeça, pescoço e patas têm coloração rosada e há certa variação na aparência dependendo do local de origem do animal na África. Os machos têm em média 2,1 a 2,8 m de altura, enquanto as fêmeas são menores, medindo entre 1,7 e 2,0 m.
