Os bonobos (Pan paniscus) vivem nas matas e pântanos das República Democrática do Congo. Seu parentesco mais próximo é com o chimpanzé comum (Pan troglodytes). De todas as espécies na natureza, esses dois tipos de primata são os que têm o DNA mais próximo dos humanos.
