O dhole-de-ussuri habita florestas, pradarias e tundra na Índia, China, Tailândia, Nepal, Bangladesh e Mianmar, e é a maior subespécie de dhole. É um animal de pelos vermelhos, barriga branca e focinho estreito. Troca de pelagem no verão e no inverno, sendo a invernal mais espessa e dotada de um tom mais vivo de vermelho. Da cabeça ao início da cauda, o animal mede de 88 a 113 cm. A cauda, por sua vez, tem de 41 a 50 cm de comprimento. Dos pés à cernelha, mede-se uma altura de 45 a 55 cm. Ambos os sexos têm tamanhos parecidos, mas os machos pesam por volta de 15 a 20 kg e as fêmeas, de 10 a 13 kg.
