A foca-cinzenta é uma espécie de mamífero marinho que vive em massas de terra no entorno do Oceano Atlântico (Reino Unido, Irlanda, Islândia, Noruega, Dinamarca, França, Holanda, Bélgica, Alemanha, Suécia, Finlândia, Estônia, Letônia, Lituânia, Polônia, Rússia, Canadá e EUA). As focas-cinzentas do lado oeste do Atlântico são consideravelmente maiores que as do leste. Os machos medem entre 2,30 m e 2,90 m de comprimento e pesam de 205 kg a 370 kg, enquanto as fêmeas medem entre 1,90 m e 2,30 m e pesam de 160 kg a 250 kg.
