O coala (Phascolarctos cinereus) é um marsupial arborícola que vive nas florestas de eucalipto do leste da Austrália. A espécie apresenta uma pelagem que vai de cinzenta a marrom, além de membros curtos com garras ágeis, orelhas arredondadas e felpudas e um focinho preto em formato de bulbo. A espécie apresenta dimorfismo sexual, ou seja, o macho é consideravelmente maior que a fêmea. Os coalas medem de 60 a 75 cm de comprimento. O macho da espécie pesa de 4,2 a 9,1 kg, enquanto a fêmea pesa de 4,1 a 7,3 kg. A espécie alimenta-se quase que exclusivamente de folhas de eucalipto.
