De heilige pillenkever of scarabee is een mestkever die voorkomt in de kustduinen en moerassen rond de Middellandse Zee, in Noord-Afrika, Europa en het Midden-Oosten. De kop van de pillenkever heeft 6 langwerpige uitsteeksels en op elk van zijn voorpoten zitten er 4, waardoor het lijkt alsof er een stralenboog aan de voorkant van de kever zit. De heilige pillenkever is 10 tot 25 mm groot en heeft een glimmend zwart schild.
