북극곰(Ursus maritimus)은 북극권과 아북극 지역에 사는 큰 곰 종입니다. 완전히 흰색인 털과 검은 눈, 검은 코를 지녔으며 튼튼한 다리와 큰 발이 있어 수영을 잘합니다. 곰은 열 손실을 최소화하기 위해 귀가 작고 꼬리가 짧습니다. 수컷은 몸길이가 2.4~3.0m 사이이며, 몸무게는 350~750kg 사이입니다. 암컷은 몸길이 1.8~2.4m이며, 몸무게는 150~250kg입니다. 암수 모두 고리무늬물범과 턱수염물범을 먹고 삽니다.
