서부저지대고릴라(Gorilla gorilla gorilla)는 카메룬과 적도기니, 가봉, 콩고 공화국, 니제르 남부에 자생하며 열대 우림과 슾지 삼림, 버려진 농지에서 서식하며 먹이를 찾습니다. 검은색 피부에 어두운 두 눈이 앞을 향하고 있습니다. 눈 위의 두드러진 뼈와 거대한 콧구멍이 있으며, 얼굴과 귀, 손, 발을 제외한 모든 부위는 억센 털이 감싸고 있습니다. 수컷이 암컷보다 훨씬 크며, 성숙한 고릴라 등에 난 털은 회색빛이 되어 '실버백'이라고 불립니다. 고릴라는 작은 무리를 이룹니다. 무리는 실버백이 지배하며, 암컷과 어린 수컷, 새끼들을 돌봅니다.
