오늘날 아프리카 황무지에는 대략 20,000마리의 사자가 있지만 서아프리카사자(Panthera leo leo)의 수는 아주 적습니다. 대륙 전체에서 오직 250마리만 남아 있는 이 아종은 세계의 멸종 위기종 중 하나입니다. 현재 멸종 위험이 '위급'으로 분류되어 있습니다.
