물왕도마뱀(Varanus salvator)은 열대 우림과 늪지, 맹그로브 숲, 그리고 동남아시아와 인도 아대륙의 온난한 지역 대부분에 서식하는 대형 파충류입니다. 암녹색에서 검은색에 이르는 색을 지니고 있으며, 몸 전체에 연한 갈색 및 노란색의 무늬가 그물 모양으로 퍼져 있습니다. 꼬리에는 이러한 무늬가 띠 형태로 나타나기도 합니다. 물왕도마뱀은 암수의 모습이 다른데, 수컷이 암컷보다 덩치가 큽니다. 수컷은 길이가 1.5m에서 2m에 달하며, 몸무게는 5~50kg으로 평균 20kg 정도 나갑니다. 반면 암컷의 길이는 1.2~1.8m이며, 몸무게는 2~22kg입니다.
