일본원숭이(Macaca fuscata)는 일본 고유의 원숭이입니다. 일본 북부의 아북극 숲을 포함한 다양한 환경에 살고 있으며, 이 때문에 눈원숭이라고도 합니다. 두꺼운 베이지색 털과 하얀 배, 분홍색 얼굴을 지녔으며, 수컷은 몸길이가 평균 57cm이고, 무게는 평균 11kg 나갑니다. 암컷은 그보다 약간 작아서 몸길이가 평균 52cm이며, 몸무게는 평균 8kg입니다. 암수 모두 10~100마리의 무리 안에서 생활하며, 친척 사이이며 유대감이 강한 암컷과 다른 무리에 유입된 친척이 아닌 수컷으로 이루어져 있습니다. 이 종은 멸종 위기에 처하지 않았으며 야생에서 잘 살고 있습니다. 오히려 개체 수가 너무 많아지면 작물과 나무의 손상을 막기 위해 원숭이를 사냥할 정도입니다.
